How to exercise when time is against you

When it comes to excuses for not exercising; time, tiredness and money feature amongst the top reasons why we have not hit the gym or worked out. In 2018, time was regarded as big a commodity as money. And 2019 is set to be no different.

As health professionals call for us to practice preventative care through exercise and dietary changes– how can we stay healthy when time is short?

We at TGt Swindon have listed five ways you can fit in exercise into a busy lifestyle.

1/ Make time

Sounds obvious, we know, however looking at how you spend your time and where you can save it will not only be good for your health but well-being.

2019 is set to be the year of simplifying with digital cleanses, decluttered homes and commitments to doing less opposed to more.

Approach tasks as you would your wardrobe; does it still fit your lifestyle, does it add benefit, is it necessary? If the answer is no, say good bye to it and spend that time on you, and your health.

2/ Use your environment

In tune with this year’s simple living, using your environment to exercise is a great way to ensure fitness features in your everyday.

We especially love the kitchen workout by Dr Rangan Chatterjee. Why not work out while cooking dinner with squats, press ups and lunges? Use tins as weights and work tops for support, a kitchen workout brings a whole new meaning to a home gym!

3/Commit and reward yourself

As with all successful projects and ambitions, there needs to be a relative level of commitment. Because when it comes to exercise just turning up will not produce results. Schedule a time-slot for a short workout; before a mealtime, after the kids are in bed etc. But remember to reward yourself for achieving your goals. And we don’t mean with cake! It could be a clothing purchase, a massage or some time to yourself. Either way, track your achievements and praise yourself for progress. Motivation is as key as commitment.

4/Find a fitness buddy

Exercising with others has been scientifically proven to reduce stress levels while increasing physical and mental wellbeing. It is also good to have someone to answer too when your motivation takes a dip.

Why not involve your furry friends as fitness buddies or children to extend the benefits and maximise your time with loved ones? It need not be a walk, be inventive; Doga (dog yoga) or yoga with children, make an exercise circuit or assault course – anything that gets your heart pumping.

5/ Cut yourself some slack

The race is not always to the swift, but to those who keep on running. - Unknown

The most significant contributor to success when taking up a new routine is to be kind to yourself. If you miss a session, do not give up, but start the next day again. Always focus on your achievements, not your failures.

We wish you a happy, healthy start to 2019!
