TGtS Reviews West Side Story
When Jack FM invited us to The Wyvern Theatre to watch this year's Summer Youth Project, we couldn't think of anyone better to send along than avid theatre goer and musical lover, Patricia Ledger! Here's her review of West Side Story:
WOW, what an amazing production of West Side Story by The Wyvern Theatre`s Summer Youth Project (Thurs 23 - Sun 26 August 2012).
As an aficionado of musicals, and particularly West Side Story, I must admit I was somewhat trepadatious about viewing this production, having seen the film about 20 times and watching a West End professional production. However, from the opening number I was totally transfixed - this was one of the best musical productions I have ever seen. The energy was electrifying, the sets, costumes and music were brilliant and the outstanding talent of the young performers was to be marvelled at - each and everyone gave their all.
The whole theatre pulsed with excitement when the big production numbers were performed and the young children filled the aisles to join in with the singing and dancing. The poignant songs and scenes still brought a tear to my eye and the brilliant comic rendition of Officer Krupke nearly brought the house down.
Special mention of superb performances to Edward Baxter (Tony), Kerrie Scarff (Maria),Katie Silvester (Anita) and Elliott Winskill as the hard-bitten, disenchanted NY Cop Officer Krupke.
If there are Awards for Best Youth Theatre Project this deserves the Gold Medal.
Thank you Actors and The Wyvern Theatre for bringing us this outstanding production.
