REVIEW: Sunday Lunch at The Barrington Arms Shrivenham

Total Guide to Swindon took a trip to the revamped Barrington Arms in Shrivenham to sample the Sunday lunch and what a treat it was!

We were greeted by the new manager, Rob Pinchin, and shown to our reserved table in their beautiful garden. The garden has had a total makeover and is an oasis of beauty and calm. There is a lovely patio with tables and sun umbrellas and an equally lovely grassed area beyond, also laid out with tables and umbrellas.

We noticed there were also patio heaters for those slightly chillier days which were definitely not needed when we dined there as it was one of the hottest days of the year, but the large sun umbrellas provided us with all the shade we needed.

On our visit, the Sunday lunch menu included roast beef, lamb, pork and chicken. The pork, lamb and chicken are all locally sourced from Hinton Marsh Farm and the beef is Scottish from the renowned local butcher Pat Thomas. There is also a vegetarian option and sustainably fished cod and chips was also on the menu. Starters included home made scotch eggs and camembert to share. We opted to go straight in for the mains with two of us going for the beef and others in the party selecting the lamb and the chicken.

We requested the beef medium rare and it was spot on. Always a good sign of a good large piece of beef when you can request pink or more well done. The meat itself was tender, tasty and succulent and the others in the party who had selected the lamb and chicken also raved about it. A great selection of seasonal fresh vegetables accompanied the meats including asparagus, broccoli spears, spring greens, carrots and lettuce hearts.

The roast potatoes were crisp and the Yorkshire puddings were enormous and they also provided us with extra pots of gravy. We had no room for desserts, but chocolate brownies and sticky toffee pudding were on the menu.

The service was excellent and the ambience of this newly revamped and managed venue is delightful. Well done to all the staff and, of course the host, Rob Pinchin, for providing us with such a great Sunday lunch. We strongly recommend a visit to this establishment, and we shall definitely be returning.
