10 Reasons to Eat Ice Cream this Winter

Rays Ice Cream make delicious ice cream all year round but inevitably see the demand for it drop somewhat over the winter months. They have put together this list of reasons why they think eating great quality ice cream is a year-round activity.

1. There’ll be no queues in the ice cream shop, you’ll get more time to taste all of the flavours on offer and chat to the team about that flavour you’ve always wanted to see.

2. You won’t need to rush to get home with your take home tubs or your ice cream cake.

3. That warming winter pud just isn’t the same without a scoop of delicious creamy ice cream – apple pie with cinnamon ice cream – yum!

4. It tastes just as delicious no matter what time of year and you often see some more unusual flavours in the winter- cinnamon, ginger, coffee, baileys, whiskey and marmalade, mulled wine sorbet to name but a few.

5. Vitamin D, aka the sunshine vitamin. It’s not surprising we can struggle to get adequate amounts of it during winter – the sun’s out less and we’re indoors more. Enter (proper) ice cream – not many foods contain vitamin D, but ice cream does!

6. Happy vibes! Neuroscientists at The London Institute of Psychiatry have found that eating a spoonful of ice cream lights up the same pleasure centre in the brain as listening to your favourite music, or winning money. It’s an instant effect so go on, have a scoop and feel those winter blues drain away.

7. Warm, home made Belgian waffles most certainly taste better with a delightful scoop of ice cream melting over the top.

8. It’s that time of year when coughs and colds are thriving and you’re likely to get a sore throat at some point during the winter months. Ice cream’s cooling, soothing effect can work wonders!

9. If it’s good enough for the Alaskans… An oft-quoted statistic in Alaska is that they consume more ice cream per capita than any other US state. Alaskans love to eat ice cream all year round, ‘we never know when the sun is going to come out, so seize the cone!’ says Mary Smith, editor of Edible Alaska.

10. Have you tasted Christmas pudding ice cream? Hadi Brooks, owner of Rays Ice Cream says it’s one of her all-time favourites, all of the flavours of the traditional festive pud without any of the heaviness.

Rays Home Made Ice Cream shops in Old Town, Swindon and in Royal Wootton Bassett remain open throughout the year, opening times vary, please see the website for details. You can also order Christmas treats, ice cream cakes, cheesecakes and bake at home brownies via the website.
