POLITICS STUDENTS APPEAR ON BBC POINTS WEST

Over the past few weeks, the Politics department at New College has run a number of initiatives and promotions in order to encourage young people to register to vote.

A number of debates were held, as well as a mock election and stations in the foyer and LRC where learners could register to vote.

The fantastic work the Politics staff and students have been doing encouraged some fantastic media attention, with the College featuring on BBC Points West and BBC Radio Wiltshire.

Politics Lecturer, Sarah Bennett, talked on the BBC Radio Wiltshire Drivetime show about the initiatives and how New College prepares its students for first-time voting.

Kian Saber and Hannah Wiltshire are Politics students at the College and they represented the youth perspective on BBC Points West. In a live interview, they discussed the political issues they feel passionate about, such as housing and climate change, then also gave an interview about the forthcoming election with former New College Politics student Dan O’Brien, who is now the BBC Wiltshire Political Correspondent. Both students enjoyed the experience in front of and behind the camera and are hoping to undertake work experience with the BBC.
