NEW COLLEGE STUDENT ATTENDS PRESTIGIOUS CISCO COMPUTING PROGRAMME

Each year, Cisco, worldwide leader in IT, networking and cyber security solutions, run a work experience programme. This half-term (17th-20th Feb) Cisco is hosting a one-week programme for 16-18-year-old female students, who are interested in a career in computing and want to learn more about the vast array of careers available within the business.

New College student, Julia, who is currently studying Computer Science, Engineering, Physics and Mathematics, was accepted onto the programme and is there this week. She will spend time learning about the world of Cisco and the environment they work in and spend time working in a team, learning what life is really like in key roles. With everything from sales and marketing to software design engineering, finance and CSR – those on the programme are on the right track to find their passion.

Students will also further develop the kind of skills used every day in business, including presentation and communication skills, problem solving and team working. They will also have time to find out about Cisco’s Degree Apprenticeships, Internships and Graduate programmes.

Julia said: “If I'm being honest, I really didn't think that I was going to get a place, but I was able to impress them despite my nervousness during the interview. I am aware of the wonderful opportunity that I have been given and it is something that I will definitely cherish and take advantage of as much as I can.  I am beyond delighted that I can start this new year with such a big achievement and that I get to share it with my school as well. It really is an honour to represent New College on the programme."

Julia will be surround by other female students on the programme, who are also passionate about the world of computing.

Julia added: “Being in this type of positive environment will definitely be extra motivation for me to continue working hard for my dreams. The field of computing is largely dominated by males and I intend to use this experience as a reminder not to give up and that I can make it in the industry, even if I may be in the minority."

She is not yet sure exactly which pathway she wants to take yet, but Julia did say that she knows her future will involve tech work and computing. The programme will help Julia gain a better understanding of what the computing world currently looks like and may even help her discover what future path she wishes to take.
