Community urged to get behind the Swindon Half Marathon 2016

Organisers of the Swindon Half Marathon have launched a crowd funding campaign for individuals and companies to make sure the popular event can go ahead on Sunday 16 October.

The Swindon Half Marathon has been a major event in the town’s community timetable for some years, but its future looked uncertain last year after the British Heart Foundation withdrew from directing it. However, SEQOL Community Foundation, the charitable arm of SEQOL, stepped in to lead and coordinate the event and the 2015 event not only went ahead but was hailed as a “runaway” success.

While SEQOL Community Foundation is leading on the event again this year, organisers still need to raise £27,000 from the community to fund essential expenses such as road closures.

The chair of SEQOL Community Foundation, Michelle Howard, said:

“The success of the 2015 event was down to the sponsorship and donations of local businesses and individuals, as well as support from all the amazing volunteers, and it is their generosity and commitment that will make this event happen again.

“We have already had donations from local companies and individuals, but we are now calling on the town as a whole to give one final push and do what it can towards one of Swindon’s biggest and most popular community events.

“It’s not all about the 13.1mile route - there is also a five-mile multi terrain and also a fun two-mile route.  So whilst ensuring it is great for hardcore athletes, it will again be friendly and inclusive, with something for everyone, an event which encourages people across Swindon to come together and be active.  Participants if they wish can take part for a charitable cause close to their own hearts and we aim again this year for a wide range of local charities to benefit as an outcome of this event.

“I know the community of Swindon loved this event, and I also know that the people of Swindon and its companies, big and small, are generous. If as many of us as possible put our hands in our pockets and contribute what we can, we will secure another brilliant Half Marathon that the town can be proud of.”

The Swindon Half Marathon Event is set to take place on Sunday 16 October, following its traditional routes which includes a mix of the town’s urban and rural scenes. The Swindon Half Marathon Event is non-profit making, and any surplus is invested in the community by SEQOL Community Foundation. Funds raised through the crowdfunding campaign will pay for essential infrastructure costs that allow the event to go ahead safely, such as road closures.

The campaign with individuals or businesses able to make a pledge - is on an ‘all or nothing’ basis, so people pledging will not have the donation transactions completed unless the target amount is pledged. Rewards include a personalised shout out from presenters on the day, personalised banners to cheer people along the route, opportunities for promotional stands in the race village and a lucky dip drawer for all the medal ribbons to be branded with your company name.
