Top Tips for a Successful Business Show

Business shows are a great way to showcase your company to potential customers and to meet other local businesses through the networking opportunities they provide. There are lots of things you can do to make sure you get the most out of your day - and there are also lots of things you really should try to avoid.

To help you master the exhibition hall, we’ve put together the dos and don’ts of successful business show exhibiting.

Do plan your day in advance
See what’s on and when. It could be worthwhile visiting a networking session or a breakfast if you want to mingle. You don’t always need everyone stationed at your stand – so take full advantage of what’s available.

Invite your customers and engage with other exhibitors. Look on social media to see what everyone else is doing and keep an eye on the hashtags. Making a clear plan and being organised will ensure your day is a success.

Don’t hide behind a desk
Don’t let your desk be a barrier. The further away you are from your potential customers the harder you're making it for them to connect with you. Position yourself in front of any stand or desk; that way you can make sure you’re ready to help and converse with any potential leads.

Do make eye contact and smile
You want to engage with people so show them that you’re approachable. It’s proven that if you smile and make eye contact people will be much more inclined to come over and speak to you. If you avoid eye contact, it looks like you don’t want to speak to them. It really is that simple.

Don’t eat at your stand
People just don’t like to watch other people eat. Visitors won’t want to disturb you and there’s nothing worse than talking with your mouth full. This also counts for chewing gum too. Ditch the gum and opt for a breath-freshening mint.

Business shows can be a long day so you need to take a break. Make sure you give yourself time to get away from your stand, sit down, and refuel.

Do remind yourself of your objectives
Remember that you came to the business show for a reason. Whether you want to collect business cards, meet new people or build on your brand awareness, it’s important to remember why you are there in the first place. This will ensure you get the most out of your day.

Don’t work on your laptop or mobile phone
If you’re sat behind your desk, head stuck in your laptop working, or even glued to your mobile phone, you’re going to put potential customers off. Make sure your ‘out of office’ is on and that you give the exhibition and your potential customers your fullest attention.

Do think about your merchandise
If you choose to have merchandise make sure you invest in something that’ll be noticed. Look for something that can be used on a desk. It’s true what they say; top of desk is front of mind. Make sure you’re selective too, if you’ve spent a lot of money on your products don’t just hand them out to everyone.
