TGt Meets... Paul Gosling

We caught up with Paul Gosling, Tax Manager at Banks BHG, to talk about career advice, biggest achievements and family time.

Describe your job role.
Being in charge of the Tax Department and dealing with the questions arising from our client’s, whether that is a straightforward question about their code number or Tax Return, dealing with more technical aspects of the running of their businesses whether they are a sole trader/partnership or Limited Company. Our aim is to deal with the tax issues for the client to remove that stress from them and let them get on with the successful day to day running of their business.

What’s your favourite aspects of your position?
I enjoy the interaction with both the clients and my work colleagues.

What are your next steps for you in your career?
I have been involved in the world of taxes either with HMRC or in private practice now for 39 years this July (gulp!) and each year throws up something different – I just think you need to be aware of what is happening and add that to your knowledge bank.

What’s your biggest achievement to date?
Adopting my two children and bringing them up in the same sort of family environment that I had, as well as seeing them both succeed. Also celebrating last year 30 years of being married.

How do you spend your free time?
Family time is always important and I am currently helping my daughter to launch her first CD in June, which is quite exciting! The job carries with it responsibility and work can be stressful. I also enjoy playing golf, singing with a local community choir and spending time with friends.

When faced with two equally-qualified candidates, how do you determine whom to hire?
I would always go for the candidate who I feel is going to deal with our clients calmly and in a friendly manner. Qualifications are very important but so is an understanding of the client, how to deal with them and making them feel at ease. Of course being a team member is also important.

What is one characteristic that you believe every leader should possess?
Stay calm and controlled. The example of the swan on the river is a good one, where it looks calm on the surface but you can’t see its feet paddling away under the water. If as a manager you show you have concerns this will feed through to both your colleagues and the clients.

What is the biggest challenge facing leaders today?
Pressure and stress. Keeping your head and dealing with day to day issues as best you can.

What advice would you give someone going into a leadership position for the first time?
Be aware that whilst having knowledge of the work is required, you also need to be able to work with people just too.
