TGt Meets... Charlie Metcalfe - IWD Special
As part of our series of interviews with inspirational women for International Women's Day, we caught up with Charlie Metcalfe, director at Celestial consultancy, and spoke about juggling work and family life, and how to succeed in her industry!
Name: Charlie Metcalfe
Which woman would you compare yourself to?
I wouldn’t compare myself to anyone, everyone is an individual and I believe you should be an individual and lead your own path
What would you say is your most valuable skill and why?
Juggling (metaphorically speaking as I can’t actually juggle!) It’s not easy being a full time working mummy/wife whilst developing yourself too.
Why do you think it's important to have an International Women's Day?
I think it is important to celebrate how far we as humans have evolved not just to recognise Women. Whilst there are more Women with careers, owning businesses and holding positions of great power, there is also more men holding the fort at home or supporting them to achieve their goals. I think we have a lot to celebrate these days and sometimes this gets overlooked.
How do you maintain a work/life balance?
I have a great support system. A wonderful husband, a supportive family and an amazing childminder, which enable me to give my all in my career. I meditate and do Reiki which keeps me balanced and I try to see friends and family as much as humanly possible.
Have you ever had to give up or miss out on anything in order to pursue your career?
Yes, I have missed things across the years especially when I was an International Event Manager, however there have also been times when I have logged off completely for the good of my family and myself
Do you ever experience any discrimination in the workplace because of your gender?
Not recently, however, I worked for an “old school” GM once who didn’t think you should have a job and a baby. His problem, not mine!
Based on your own experiences, what advice would you give to fellow females looking to get into your profession?
Hospitality is 365 days a year and although extremely rewarding, you have to be willing to put in the unsociable hours and work extremely hard. But hold on tight, it’s one heck of a ride!
If you could have dinner with 5 inspirational women dead or alive, who would they be?
Cleopatra, Marylin Monroe, Pink, Amanda Balding & Samantha Scott (you may need to google the last two!)
As a successful female, where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?
Hopefully retired! Realistically still in a happy place doing what I love best.
