TGt Meets... Alex Morgan

As International Women's Day approaches, we've been chatting to Managing Director of Abbey Communication and True North, Alex Morgan.

Which women would you compare yourself to?
I admire many successful women, but don’t like to compare myself to any. I think it’s best if women try to be the best version of themselves they can be, rather than comparing themselves to others.

What would you say is your most valuable skill and why?
I’ve built my career on my training and coaching skills, those are the skills that have served me best.

Why do you think it’s important to have an International Women’s Day?
Women around the world need to support each other to achieve their goals and ambitions. We also need to support girls and young women, and provide them with inspiration and opportunities. IWD represents this philosophy.

Do you have a family? How do you maintain a work/life balance?
Yes I have 2 teenage daughters, one in sixth form and one has just gone to university.  Over the years I have tried many versions of childcare, and different work/life balance combinations. None have been the ideal solution, but each one has enabled me to carry on working. Work for me is a very important part of my life, and I never wanted to give it up completely.  That said, the ideal solution for me turned out to be working for myself, that way I had more control over my day and working hours, as well as holidays.

Have you ever had to give up or miss on anything in order or pursue your career?
Yes, I expect so, but I don’t regret anything. I’ve always managed to focus on the 2 most important things – family and work.

Have you ever experienced discrimination?
I’ve experience sexual harrassment a few times. This is a form of discrimination as it makes you feel uncomfortable in your work place, and it makes you want to leave, thus resulting in your career being limited at that place of work.

Based on your own experience, what advice would you give to fellow females looking to get into your profession?
Training and Coaching is a wonderful and flexible career for women, but you need life experience and work experience to be credible as a trainer of management skills or leadership skills. So if this career interests you, make sure you have clear goals, which include getting credible management experience first in a large company, and never stop being curious about how companies and teams of people work.

Do men ever feel intimidated by your success?
Over the years I’ve learned to work with people that are supportive rather than competitive, it’s the best way to get good results, irrespective of gender.

If you could have dinner with 5 inspriational women, who would they be?
Gloria Steinem, Hilary Clinton, Shami Shakrabati, Naomi Klein, Sandy Toksvig.

As a successful female, where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
Doing the same thing more or less, and helping my girls with their lives. As well as I hope I will have finally achieved my Doctorate.
