Swindon's Oldest Businesses - Barnes Coaches

In the latest series of our business articles, we are exploring Swindon's oldest businesses and finding out the secrets to their successful longevity. In our third article we spoke to Matt Barnes, Director of Barnes Coaches to find out more about their continued success after opening in 1920.

When did your business first open?

1920

Has your business changed in any way since it opened?

It began carrying goods from Hungerford Train Station to the surrounding areas. People started catching lifts on the lorries and so gradually became people-focused rather than freight.

How has your business had to adapt over the years?

Passenger comfort and environmentally sound vehicles are the biggest concern in our industry and we ensure we are constantly adapting to be at the very forefront of these areas.

What has been the key to your longevity?

Amazing people driving, in the workshop and in the office. Plus, hard work!

What has been the biggest challenge for your business?

Undoubtedly COVID. It was the perfect disease to cripple our industry! But with the dedication of everyone who works here and the patience of our brilliant customers, we are back and ready to go with Day Trips back operating this week and Holidays starting from the 17th May. Bookings are strong, everyone wants to get away and a Staycation by Coach is the perfect thing for 2021, be it for a holiday or just a day trip.
