Swindon Lives - Graeme Stephenson
Graeme is an experienced commercial and marketing operations manager currently responsible for Bowman House Business Centre. Following our 10 question grilling, find out what Graeme had to say about living and working in the area.
Who has had the greatest impact on you as a business leader? Perhaps a mentor or a family member?
I have been very fortunate in my career to have benefitted from the support, help, and guidance of many of my former bosses. Whilst it is difficult to pinpoint who has had the greatest impact I think it is important that when you have access to an inspiration leader you take every opportunity to listen and learn.
Based on your own experiences, what advice would you give someone looking to do the same?
‘Always look for a better way’ this was a motto used by a telecoms company I worked for some time ago and I believe that as an ethos it is a good standpoint. Keeping ahead of the game is important, in business the fast eat the slow.
What are your professional goals?
My ambition is to create a vibrant business community in Bowman House where companies and clients are able to integrate and grow. Working from the right place can make a huge difference and my aim is to make Bowman House the location of choice.
What do you think attracts business people to Swindon?
Swindon’s location on the M4 makes it an ideal base and the town has a reputation for business growth .There is a plentiful supply of business premises, a skilled labour force and the Local Enterprise Partnership looking to support inward investment.
How do you like to spend your time off?
I have recently moved house and the new place is in need of a bit of renovation, so I think my time away from work is going to be taken up with getting it up to spec ! However I am sure that I will still find time for a game of tennis and the odd 10k run.
Where is your favourite place to eat in Swindon?
We are often out of town walking the dog and enjoy a visit to The Blue Boar at Aldbourne.
Your phone book must be full of business contacts, but who is the most famous person in there?
Yes I have made a lot of business contacts over the years and whilst few are famous many are good friends and extremely successful. The business card of Andy Caddick, the former Somerset and England cricketer is in my folder; we worked together many years ago during his benefit year
What has been your greatest achievement to date?
Building successful teams in many of the organizations I have worked for has given me enormous satisfaction. Contributing to the development of other people, helping them to maximize their potential and to see them grow in self confidence is incredibly rewarding.
