Looking Forward To Christmas!

What does Christmas 2020 mean for you in your business? 

Christmas is a time of year when the ones we love and the ones we love to hate are near and dear to our hearts, there is no better way to tell someone you love them with a sarcastic, edgy, or rude gift from one of our stores!  We love Christmas!

In your business when do you start planning Christmas?

We actually start planning mid-summer, that’s the best time to start our designs. Figure out what we like and don’t like and then begin working on website and app updates for a November launch.

Will your business be operating differently during Quarter 4 2020? 

As we are primarily online and have adjusted our pricing as much as possible to provide as much value as we can to our community members there will not be any significant changes in Qtr. 4 that I currently can foresee. That doesn’t mean we can’t or won't pivot our business model to keep overcoming challenges as they come. 

Are you planning any events in Quarter 4, virtual or real-world? 

We currently are going to blow up a turkey for Christmas that’s stuffed with aluminum foil, silverware and shoved in a microwave - LOL! (joke!)

We will have our ugly sweater contest closer to Christmas that will have a cash prize with it and we will also have a 'different' reindeer contest as we get closer to Christmas.

With Covid19, we are constantly trying to find ways to engage our community so they don’t feel isolated or alone. 

Have you got any milestones to share? 

We just had our anniversary in October, but we are running a charity fundraiser for a veteran in need where we are donating a percentage of all sold items from our The Night Before Facebook Collection (sensitivity alert! this is not suitable for children or those with a sensitive nature)

Have you employed any new staff recently? 

I have two amazing team members, Devra Brusso our community manager, and Lizzy Middleton who handles community relations. They take a ton of work of my plate and I know that everything will be ok every day when they are engaged in the community. 

By the way, Devra is also one half of the Pirate Crew Parlay 8 and have a live stream on our app on Thursday nights as well!

Have you faced some challenges which have changed things for you? 

Absolutely, challenges come every day and we love challenges whether it's breaking into a new market, partnering on a solution with another company or creating a new solution for a client. 

Just recently we partnered with A Wild Ride Called Life, created by Annette Whittenberger to create a transitioning app for military members. This app will allow for easy, accurate, and instant information for transitioning soldiers the information they need to be successful after they leave the military. 

This includes but not limited to, career resources, mental health resources, and benefits information. Our hope is that this will help cut through the massive amounts of inaccurate or difficult to navigate resources across the internet and provide an effective resource. How are you feeling generally about business in your community at this time? 

I’m pretty happy with it, Obviously, I like many others would be significantly happier if we were reaching our estimated numbers prior to covid19, with that being said though we could be doing way worse as a fledgling social media company taking on both big media and a world pandemic simultaneously.

One of the most frequent questions we get asked about is our logo, as a social media company you would think we would have a more effective logo that conveys exactly what we do in a single image. In reality, though our logo is actually perfect for who we are and what we are accomplishing. 

Here is our Angel’s Story. 

She actually has a name; this name is hers; it is not ours, it’s a name across history and time. Her Name is La Catrina. 

First drawn as a dandy skeleton by artist Jose Guadalupe in the early 1900s, the symbol of La Catrina was a satirical way to remind people that everyone ends up dead in the end. The type of makeup and dress you see in our logo was used to remind people to stop trying to be something they are not. No matter if you were rich or you were poor, ethnicity or color of your skin we all end up skeletons.

She went through another evolution around the 1940s when the artist Diego Rivera painted her on a large 15-metre mural in a fancy dress with a fancy feathered headdress, this influenced the look La Catrina has today and most people know in North America.

From there La Catrina evolved into a symbol of the Day of The Dead (Día De Los Muertos) celebrated across the world in recent years and best known in South America (Mexico) where women and men dress up and paint their faces in the skeleton and La Catrina likeness and celebrate life, food, lost love ones, being true to yourself and true to others. 

We celebrate everyday living our true selves and not living like something we are not, La Catrina is about living your true self and it’s also about not pretending to be someone you are not. 

La Catrina is the Angel that watches over all of the community members of Smoke & Bacon no matter if you are in our social app, purchase our products or just enjoy our antics.
