Sacking Luke Williams would not have made a difference, according to Swindon Town chairman Lee Power

Swindon Town chairman Lee Power does not believe that sacking head coach Luke Williams would have made a difference to the club's survival hopes.

A 2-1 defeat at home to Scunthorpe at the weekend confirmed Swindon's relegation to League Two after the Robins found themselves in the bottom four for about two months.

Chairman Power had "a feeling of devastation" following the final whistle and said he "didn't expect (Swindon) to be in this position at the start of the season.

"But the table doesn't lie and we just haven't been good enough," he continued.

"I'm the owner and chairman of the football club so I have to take full responsibility for that."

During the season, a number of fans called for Williams' head, and the 35-year-old head coach was the only 'manager' in the bottom half to keep his job from August to April.

"We decided to stick with what we had, to see if we could limp our way out of it, but it didn't happen and, at the moment, everyone's devastated.

"It's easy to say that now (whether he regretted not parting ways with Williams), we're relegated, obviously, but we put a team together that plays a certain way, or tries to play a certain way, we haven't done that well enough.

"I felt that, if I was to bring a different manager in and made that change, we would have been left with players that play this way and I'm not sure it would have made any difference.

"As a team we haven't been good enough and as a football club we haven't been good enough."

At the time of writing, Williams is still employed by the club, despite relegation.
