Five Things We Learned: Swindon Town 1-0 Millwall

Swindon got their first win in five matches on Saturday courtesy of Conor Thomas' 90th-minute strike against Millwall, and Total Sport's Ryan Walker learned five things from the early afternoon's game.

1) Rohan Ince needs to be a permanent signing

Since his arrival on loan from Brighton in January, Rohan Ince has been a game-changer in the Swindon midfield.

His youthful energy, resilience, and ability to play simple football well, has made him a solid fan favourite down at the County Ground in what has otherwise been a disastrous season.

On Saturday he put in his usual combative display against a strong Millwall side and the 24-year-old is a player that Swindon should look to tie down to a permanent deal as soon as possible.

2) The team is better off without Tim Sherwood

When it was announced that former Premier League manager Tim Sherwood was en route to the County Ground to take charge as director of football midway through the season, there was a burst of confidence within the Swindon faithful that a poor start to season could be turned around, and many started to dream of another play-off opportunity.

However, the ex-Spurs' manager impact has only been a negative one.

Confusion over his role has resulted in confusion on the pitch and when not there it appears Swindon's performances have only improved.

Luke Williams is not the coach Swindon need but his job has been made a whole lot harder with Sherwood's ever-annoying presence.

3) Prepare for the worst

The weekend's win over Millwall was no doubt fantastic for the club, its fans, and the players, after ending a four-game winless streak.

However, it's important to not get carried away. Swindon are still languishing inside the relegation zone in 22nd position on 39 points, and with Port Vale above them having two matches in hand over Town, Swindon are still looking more like going down than staying up.

Hope isn't a strategy but Swindon fans will be hoping they can stay up in League One this season.

4) Swindon can defend!

Millwall came to the County Ground on Saturday looking to extend their 14-match unbeaten run and with Swindon having one of the leakiest defences this season, conceding 59 goals in total, it was making for glum reading.

But, by securing a 1-0 victory, the Wiltshire club proved that they may have finally found a defensive strategy that works at the most important time of the season.

The performance of Dion Conroy didn't go unnoticed either as he was rock solid at the back to limit the chances of a strong Millwall attack. The Swindon defence has been shocking all season but Williams may have just found a solution when it matters most.

5) Change is still needed

Whether Swindon Town stay in League One or get relegated to League Two this season, the fact remains the same that changes are needed at SN1.

This year has shown that Williams isn't the manager we all hoped he would be and if he hadn't been signed on such a long deal then he would surely have been fired by now.

Three management changes in two seasons doesn't look good on the club, but there will need to be a fourth if things are to improve next season.

Player changes will be aplenty as well and those not commited to the cause need to be shipped out as quickly as new players need to be brought in.

Based on performances alone Swindon Town deserve to be relegated this season and a clean slate is needed for a successful future.
