Achieve the Perfect Smokey Eye for Halloween

Give your eyes a spooky update this Halloween with an Emily's Elixir 'How To' and our pick of the most goulishly gorgeous products to help create the look.

Smoky eyes are a staple look for Halloween and work perfectly with most costumes.  You can spice up the classic smoky look by adding a hint of red, green or purple depending if you’re a witch, devil or pussy cat – and don’t forget the bigger the better when it comes to lashes and liner.

To create the look you’ll need:

  • A mid tone grey eye shadow
  • A deep black eye shadow
  • A coloured eye shadow of your choice (this is optional)
  • A highlighter eye shadow
  • Black eyeliner
  • Black mascara

Method:

  • First, lightly shade in the eye lid using the grey eye shadow.
  • Next, sparingly use the black eye shadow and shade along the crease of your eye.
  • If you have decided to add some colour to your smoky eye, you now need to shade below the crease with the coloured shadow. Start at the outer eye and blend the shadow towards the inner eye to create a gradient effect. You want the stronger colour to be towards the outer part of the eye.
  • Now, using the black eye shadow, a little heavier this time, shade along the outer crease. Softly blend the eye shadow so it is darker at the outer eye and blends into the coloured shadow. Using the same eye shadow, softly line the eye.
  • Use the black eyeliner, line your top and bottom of your eye. You can make this as thick or as heavy as you like, and depending on the style you desire, make a flic at the corner of your eyes. The more dramatic the top line flic the better for this look.
  • To finish the look, use the highlighter eye shadow and sweep it below the eye bow, along  the bottom of the eyeliner, and a little from the inner corner of your eye. Make sure you blend the edges. The highlighter will make the eye more defined and enhance the smoky effect.
  • To complete the look, use either a big volume mascara or some strip lashes.
