Football Association tell Total Sport that Swindon Town have appealed Lawrence Vigouroux's red card

The FA have told Total Sport that Swindon Town have lodged an appeal against Lawrence Vigouroux's red card against Oxford United.

A spokeswoman for the FA told Total: "I can confirm they have lodged a claim of wrongful dismissal and we will be dealing with it today around 1.30/2.00 p.m."

Swindon Town, however, deny that an appeal has been made although they did admit they have been in contact with the FA.

Goalkeeper Vigouroux, 23, was shown a straight red in second-half stoppage time in the derby defeat on Sunday however, on second viewing, it was captain Nathan Thompson that fouled Oxford forward Kane Hemmings.

The challenge came outside the box with substitute Hemmings looking set to score but Thompson cut him down before he had the chance.

Confusion ensued though when Vigouroux, who was right behind Thompson, tripped over the Town skipper's body which referee Darren Deadman mistook for the foul.

It meant that Brazilian defender Raphael Branco had to go in goal for the four minutes of second-half stoppage time.

Thompson and Vigouroux had discipline problems in the reverse fixture too, which finished 2-0 to the Yellows at the Kassam Stadium, as Thompson gave away a penalty that led to the first goal and Vigouroux was sent off for a foul on Alex MacDonald.

As it stands Vigouroux would only be set to miss two matches (Bury and Northampton - both away) but if his appeal is unsuccessful his ban may be increased.

Infact, if the FA commission decide Swindon had "no prospect of success" or "amounts to an abuse of the process", Vigouroux's ban may be extended by up to double the amount.

If the commission agree that Vigouroux was in the clear, the ban will be removed.

Thompson will NOT be banned instead as the apparent claim is of "wrongful dismissal" not "mistaken identity".

Should Swindon lose their supposed appeal, they will have to pay the FA £500, which is the price for League One clubs.

The FA commission are expected to meet, and make their decision, sometime this afternoon if an appeal has indeed been made.
