5 Food Prep Hacks you Should Know

If you find making healthy, homemade meals from scratch a chore on the weekdays – due to work commitments or a busy lifestyle – then it might be time to consider adopting some helpful food prep hacks to make your life easier.

Waiting until the last minute to choose what to eat can lead to you making unhealthy choices, it’s much easier to order a pizza than try and put together some sort of pasta dish with the sad remains of your fridge. Here are six hacks to set you on the right track when it comes to food prep:

Set aside one day a week for cooking
Breakfast and lunch can be the hardest meals to decide on and cook while trying to get through a busy day, that’s why it’s a good idea to prep or even completely cook meals for these and have them waiting in the fridge ready for you to grab and take on your way.

You could do the same for dinner; cook your potatoes or vegetables on Sunday for example and have them waiting in the fridge, ready for you to simply heat up when you want them.

Plan your meals
Knowing exactly what you are going to eat each day of the week and creating a meal plan is a great hack when it comes to food prep. This way you know exactly what you need and there’s no confusion when it comes to say, Tuesday and what you’ve got in the house for dinner.

Prepping food is all about knowing what you’re going to eat that week and it should start in the supermarket. As a nation we’re super wasteful, with 177million tonnes of waste generated every year, and prepping can help you reduce your contribution. Writing a proper list and only buying what you know you need for the week, then prepping this so it’s cooked and ready to go, will stop you from finding smushy cucumbers or mouldy yoghurt in the fridge.

Choose frozen
Frozen fruit and veg not only lasts longer but is always there ready to go when you’re prepping and is a good hack when it comes to ensuring the food you prep is fresh and full of nutrients. Frozen fruit works great for smoothies and frozen veg is good for adding to meals to pad them out and fill you up.

Wear gloves and eat bread
Ever rubbed your eye after chopping chilies or cried onto the worktop while dicing an onion? Both these food prep issues can be solved by simply donning a pair of disposable gloves while cutting up the spicy stuff and having a piece of bread hanging out your mouth while chopping an onion – sound strange? The bread apparently absorbs all of the gas the onion emits and stops your eyes from tearing up.

Freeze smoothies in muffin tins
Create your favourite smoothie then pour it into muffin tins to create lots of mini portions to pop into the blender in the morning to make a delicious breakfast drink again. You’ll need two or three to make a full glass again but it’s a great way of having your breakfast for the week prepped and sorted.
